Of course, it had been not a rat, but a big lookalike, an opossum.
Once I spot the particular carcass, it's a simple couple of bagging it and bringing out down the area. It's the discovering that's the hard part. Not really in this case. The animal was trapped far beneath the floorboards, so that as always, bloated to the point it was wedged in. Thus, I had formed to grab the trusty sludge hammer (I had no crowbar) and pry up the floorboards. Once I did so, it was easy pickings. I dispersed the area, hammered the floorboard back down, and like magic, typically the "rat smell" disappeared.
